Don Reed Q&A

WHAT DID YOU DO BEFORE YOU WERE IN REAL ESTATE?

I was a plumber and then managed a plumbing business. I also took seriously some advice I received that “a person should take retirement in instalments” so I have had a number of extended sailing adventures and off road trips in Australia.

DID THE YEARS IN PLUMBING AND SAILING HELP YOU WITH REAL ESTATE?

Yes, my knowledge of the building industry often helped clients understand how they could modify a home to make it suit them. My travels and sailing helped me relate to a variety of clients more easily. It also helped me realize and appreciate that the Noosa lifestyle is an important aspect of why people move to our beautiful area.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO REAL ESTATE?

A local lawyer suggested I should have a go at selling property, using my local knowledge  and building background as well as my apparent ability to relate to people.

WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE SALE?

None come to mind as I have been involved with so many over the years but it never ceases to amaze me that prices continue to rise. When I started selling land on waterfront Noosa Sound was selling for approximately $60,000. I am pleased to have helped so many families share in the lifestyle here and made so many friends along the way.

WHAT’S YOUR GUILTY PLEASURE?

I am too old to feel guilty but I do enjoy a quiet rum in the evening.

WHAT’S THE HARDEST THING YOU HAVE EVER DONE?

I have faced and enjoyed many challenges mostly at sea, but as I enjoy rally driving, 4×4 in tough situations, racing sailing boats of all sizes, crossed many oceans and raising 2 sons, my exposure to tough situations is vast and varied. I suppose the most sustained pressure I have been under is during the two handed non-stop 30 day race from Melbourne to Osaka Japan in a 60 foot sailing boat. I was pushed to the limit if endurance and skill to keep racing night and day.

WHAT’S YOUR DEFINING CHARACTERISTIC?

I am very competitive and like to win, whether it is a race or a negotiating challenge. That has been served me well in Real Estate as I always want the best outcome for the client. The only battles I don’t always win are ones with my wife.
